Long before WaterWood became a waterfront community and resort club, this land was home to a remarkable private estate.
In the 1980s, inventor and entrepreneur Don Brown and his wife Shirley, set out to create a place on Lake Erie where design, nature, and family life could exist in quiet harmony.
Designed by the renowned architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, they built a striking lakefront home set across 160 acres of rolling shoreline. Hidden behind hills and trees, the estate was intentionally private, known mostly to boaters who passed by and called it “the castle.”
For decades, the Browns lived here quietly, surrounded by wildlife, lake views, and the simple rhythms of life on the water.
Today, that legacy continues. WaterWood carries forward the spirit of the original estate — a place shaped by vision, craftsmanship, and respect for the land. What was once a private retreat has been thoughtfully reimagined as a waterfront community and resort club where residents, members, and guests gather along the shoreline.
The lake remains the constant. WaterWood is a place to return to, again and again.
